I've been making wheel-thrown and modeled pipes in high temperature porcelain for some months now, and finally feel that I've gotten good enough at it to start promoting my efforts. I've established a blog at: http://headyclay.com to document what I've been up to this past spring and summer, and to let folks know what I'm planning to do later this year. I seem to have a fair amount to say about the history, processes, functions, and esthetics of making clay pipes, and I hope some of you will visit and advise me.

When I was a young potter, immortal and invulnerable, I made a lot of stoneware and porcelain pipes, and I really enjoyed the challenge, both in artistic and political terms.  Then I got older, grew a family, and pulled my head back into my shell. But the world seems to be changing, and I am too.  My skills have gotten a little deeper over the years, and I'm making pipes now that I might not have dared to make when I was young and not yet very proficient at handling clay. I've been making a series of effigy water pipes, made in one piece, unlike most glass water pipes, which usually feature removable bowls.  In fact, I've been approached by

My daughter April has been urging me to add a picture of the little sailboat I designed and built several years ago, on the theory that anything you make with an artful intent is art.  So I guess I will.
